Is the computer slow and full of files? Learn how to speed up the PC by doing a disk cleanup without having to resort to any software.

We often hear users complain that their computer is slow. This is mainly due to the accumulation of files and programs installed on the hard disk. So it’s important to know how to clean and how to speed up the PC.

There are lots of applications that help free up space on the computer, but it is best to do it manually. It is advisable to restart your PC after cleaning.

WINDOWS: HOW TO ACCELERATE THE PC IN 3 STEPS

1. DELETE FILE

Windows 10 has a very effective storage manager that does not require the installation of any software to free up disk space. In the “Settings” app, click “System” and then “Storage”. Here you can identify folders that are taking up more space. Select the ones that have the most files and heavier ones and delete them if you do not need them anymore.

2. UNINSTALL PROGRAMS

In most cases, your computer comes with several pre-installed programs. It is normal that you end up not using many of these programs, so you should uninstall them. Use the “Settings” app, click “Applications,” then check the list of apps you never use and delete them.

3. STORAGE

Open the “Settings”, then go to “System” and finally “Storage”. This feature will enable you to delete temporary files (which can slow your computer down) and system files (which will free up storage space), giving you a global sense of the disk space occupied by each type of file.

This should be enough to earn you a few gigabytes. But if you want more, you do not have to install any applications. Microsoft has prepared a fairly complete guide to help you gain even more space.

MAC: HOW TO ACCELERATE THE PC IN 3 STEPS

1. USE THE STORAGE MANAGEMENT

Your macOS also has tools to help you clean your disc. Click the apple icon (located in the upper left corner of the screen) and then choose the “About This Mac” option. Then click the “Storage” tab and then click the “Manage” button.

Here you will find lists that allow you to delete apps you do not have access to or files you have not used, and you can move photos and videos, for example, from the hard disk to the cloud. You will be made recommendations about files that you have not accessed for some time and should therefore be deleted.

If after deleting the files that this wizard suggested you still need more free space, try deleting files manually.

2. DELETE FILES MANUALLY

To do a manual cleaning, start with the “Downloads” and “Applications” folder through the “All Files” view. To access each of these folders, open a “Finder” window and then select the option to view folders by lists.

Then choose to sort the files by size. So you can see, with a wider view of the files, which are the ones that are taking up more space.

You can also sort the files by type. This can be useful if you know you have lots of photos and / or videos that are taking up a lot of space.

Finally, you can organize the files by date of the last opening. This way you will be able to know which files you have not played in for a long time and which are therefore disposable.
